What is the Fitzpatrick scale?
The Fitzpatrick scale is a skin classification system first developed in 1975 by Thomas Fitzpatrick, MD, of Harvard Medical School.
The system classifies skin type by the amount of melanin pigment in the skin and your skin’s reaction to sun exposure. Types range from Type 1 (lightly pigmented) to Type 6 (heavily pigmented).

Ivory or almost white skin that always freckles, burns and peel but never tans; blue, gray or green eyes; red or light blonde hair.

Fair or pale skin that usually freckles often burns and peels rarely tans; blue, green or gray eyes; red or blonde hair.
Skin Type 3

Fair to beige with golden undertones that might freckle, sometimes burns and tans; hazel or light brown eyes; dark blonde or light brown hair.

Olive or light brown rarely freckles, rarely burns, and tans often, dark brown eye; dark brown hair.

Darker shade of brown but not very dark always tan and never burn; dark brown to black eyes and hair.

Deeply pigmented dark brown to darkest brown always tans and never burn; brownish black eyes and hair.
Why is this important?
Our laser facials are safe and effective for all skin types which is rare for laser facials.
Our team of dermatologists have created protocols for our Registered Nurses to treat every skin type but it’s important that they assess your skin each visit to ensure the correct settings on our lasers are being used.
